OrganizeIt!
Custom Closets in Grasshopper
OrganizeIt! is a DIY digital design tool that empowers users to maximize their storage space and create a personalized, affordable closet system. Built as a packaged Grasshopper component composed of seven integrated tools, the platform allows users to input their closet dimensions, inventory their belongings, and customize visual elements such as color and texture within a 3D environment.
As living spaces become smaller and more expensive, many individuals struggle to balance organization, aesthetics, and budget. OrganizeIt! addresses this challenge by offering a simplified, accessible alternative that delivers professional-level customization at a fraction of the cost.
I built the tool around three main storage categories: hanging racks, closed cabinets, and open cabinets. Using standard sizing references and rectangular packing methods, the system models storage layouts in a 2D plane before extruding them into a detailed 3D configuration. Any remaining space is intelligently allocated as open storage.
Users begin by entering their closet dimensions — height, length, and width — along with an inventory of their items. They can also select color and floor finishes to personalize their design. The system then generates a fully rendered 3D closet model and provides decluttering and space-optimization recommendations.
To demonstrate the system's adaptability, I developed multiple user personas showcasing how different lifestyles, budgets, and storage needs can be supported through the same modular framework.
Persona 1 — Just moved into a tiny apartment; living a minimalist lifestyle. Saving $$ to buy a car.
Persona 2 — Lives in a luxury apartment unit, but struggles to organize her things. Wants to save $$ on closet design so she can buy more quality items.
I produced a full user manual covering: a high-level overview of the system, explanations of all plugin components, a quickstart guide, advanced usage instructions, and a section on known bugs and limitations.
