Julia Beitel

My professional interests lie at the intersection of design and technology, focusing on how thoughtful, ethical, and creative solutions can be applied to make the world a better, more sustainable place. I am a visual thinker, observing the world through a creative lens and consistently approaching problems with an unconventional mindset.

I'm currently studying at Cornell University in the Master of Science in Design Technology program. I graduated from Cornell in 2024 with a B.S. in Information Science and a minor in Environment & Sustainability, where I was a Milstein Program Scholar—beginning my exploration of the intersections between the humanities and technology.

Reef Project

Transformable Artificial Reef Structure

I designed an artificial reef restoration module that addresses the logistical challenges of transporting and deploying similar rigid underwater structures. Drawing from origami and scissor-mechanism frameworks, I created a structure that collapses into a compact, transportable form and expands into a stable reef once deployed.

Passive Cooling Wearable

I designed a passive-cooling wearable that enhances thermal comfort through the body's natural movement, offering a low-power alternative to traditional cooling devices. I used computational optimization both for the kirigami cut pattern itself and for its placement across body heat mapping, maximizing airflow while maintaining comfort and wearability.

Research & Interests

My research interests extend beyond the aesthetics of design, focusing on technologies that tackle global issues and make individuals' daily lives easier. I'm particularly passionate about sustainable design solutions and the role of technology in addressing real-world challenges.

Research at Cape Eleuthera Institute

Through my work with the Center for Sustainable Development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, I explored the intersection of sustainability and design technology, delving into waste management systems and researching mycelium as a sustainable material specifically for fashion integrations. This experience reinforced my dedication to finding sustainable and ethical solutions while engaging local stakeholders in shaping meaningful change.

I'm also deeply committed to ethical AI advocacy and creating inclusive spaces in technology. I believe the best ideas that target the world's problems are developed with a diverse range of viewpoints and perspectives. My commitment to understanding the barriers faced by others serves as a foundational principle that guides my academic and research pursuits.
